Simply extraordinary, Dutchman’s pipe carries its large heart shaped, rich green foliage in overlapping fashion–making it the perfect screen. A twiner, Dutchman’s pipe will cover chain link fences, climb poles, or decorate trellises. It is especially good against coarse bark, brick or block, and natural rough cut wood surfaces. While curious in bloom, with purple and yellowish brown pipe-shaped springborne flowers, its flowers are borne underneath the foliage. For this reason, if the flowers are to be appreciated, the plant must be carefully sited. An archway may be the best support from this standpoint as one can walk through and view the back side of the foliage, and therefore the flowers. Otherwise, one can simply lift up the foliage during spring to view them. The pendant fruit, when formed, is also interesting.

Landscape Value

A twiner, Dutchman's pipe is an excellent screen that will cover chain link fences, climb poles, or decorate trellises.

Care

Watering:

Dutchman's Pipe is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering, to maintain soil in a moist but not wet condition, during the summer months.

Fertilizing:

Dutchman's Pipe needs little fertilizer, but benefits from a single springtime or fall topdressing (about 1 inch deep) of organic compost or well rotted leaves. Alternatively, a springtime application of a slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet.

Pruning:

Dutchman's Pipe should be pruned while dormant during late fall or winter.
