This is the classic clump forming lilyturf so common in the Midsouthern states. And, although we have not sold it in Zone 5, many of our Zone 5 customers have been using it successfully for years. This is the case also with ‘Variegata’ listed below. ‘Big Blue’ grows relatively tall, is quite robust, and is decorated with deep green foliage. Because it has a nonspreading habit it is superb for edging and accent, and during fall it flowers with lavender pink stars that are arranged in narrow spikes and carried above the foliage.

Care

Watering:

'Big Blue' Lily-turf is very drought tolerant and typically only needs watering during the hottest days of summer.

Fertilizing:

'Big Blue' Lily-turf benefits from regular feeding and likely will grow best with: a spring (May) application of slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and a summer (July) application of slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) at a rate of about 10 pound per 1000 square feet, and and an early fall (September) application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) at a rate of 15 pounds per 1000 square feet to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

'Big Blue' Lily-turf should be enjoyed all winter long, then, during early April before it begins to grow again, it should be pruned or mowed back to ground level.
