Clematis maximowicziana
Blooming Time
Exposure

This is one of the fastest growing, most easily cultured and heaviest flowering of any vine hardy to the Midwest. As a climber, it is tenacious and will ascend quickly by tendril-like petioles, but its merits as a ground cover should not be overlooked. As such, it will easily spread 10-feet per year and forms a weed impenetrable mat. This would lead one to consider it for use in covering steep banks, but it does not root as it spreads, and therefore is best used only on gently sloping banks and level terrain. Tolerance to drought, heat, and reflected light is exceptional and the display of fragrant white flowers in September and October is astounding. Prune early to mid spring.

Care
Watering:
Sweet Autumn Clematis is very drought tolerant and typically only needs watering during the hottest days of summer.
Fertilizing:
Sweet Autumn Clematis is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.
Pruning:
Sweet Autumn Clematis should be pruned while dormant during late fall or winter.
