Prelude™ Purple emerges in early spring with mounds of vibrant green, coarse textured, tooth-edged foliage that acts as a foil to wands of extra-large, deep royal-violet snapdragon like flowers. Carried atop the foliage in substantive clusters the flowers are borne continuously from late spring until summer (and even into fall if plants are deadheaded). Beloved by pollinators for their nectar, the flowers attract bees and butterflies and hummingbirds. And, because the foliage is minty scented, the deer and rabbits tend to leave it alone. Prelude™ Purple can be used as a specimen, groundcover, or companion to numerous perennials.

Landscape Value

Prelude™ Purple can be used as a specimen, groundcover, or companion to numerous perennials.

Care

Watering:

Prelude™ Purple Large Flowered Catmint is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering, to maintain soil in a moist but not wet condition, during the summer months.

Fertilizing:

Prelude™ Purple Large Flowered Catmint is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

Prelude™ Purple Large Flowered Catmint should be enjoyed all winter long, then, during early April before it begins to grow again, it should be pruned or mowed back to ground level.
