Thriving in heat, this mid-sized Russian sage is one of the earliest to bloom, and most impressive in respect to floral effect. Its broad upright spikes of lavender-blue flowers are carried above its gray-green shrublike mounded base. While ‘Blue Jean Baby’ is a compact grower, it grows quickly and reaches its mature size in just two to three growing seasons. It is outstanding in mass plantings and when used as edging.

Care

Watering:

'Blue Jean Baby' Russian Sage is very drought tolerant and typically only needs watering during the hottest days of summer.

Fertilizing:

'Blue Jean Baby' Russian Sage is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

'Blue Jean Baby' Russian Sage sets its flower buds in summer, and any pruning should be conducted in April, immediately after winter.
