Isotoma fluviatilis

Exposure

Hardy in Zone 7, we found our plants at a nursery in Zone 5, and have grown them without a hint of winter stress in Zone 6. Further, we have talked to many people who have been successfully growing it in Zone 5. So, by all means try this plant. It is one of the most amazing ‘foot friendly’ creeping/carpeting stepping-stone-filling ground covers on the market. It is attractive for its cheerful-green evergreen foliage., but what’s truly amazing about blue-star creeper is that it never seems to quit blooming. Late summer to fall, it is adorned with a multitude of lilac petaled deep-purple-veined, yellow centered flowers.

Special Characteristics

Features
Vibrant green evergreen leaves set the perfect backdrop to blue star-shaped spring through fallborne flowers.
Landscape Value
Low growing spreading ground cover used in place of turf and as a filler between patio- and stepping stones. Tolerates foot traffic.
Care
Watering:
Blue-star Creeper is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering, to maintain soil in a moist but not wet condition, during the summer months.
Fertilizing:
Blue-star Creeper is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.
Pruning:
Blue-star Creeper is evergreen and does not require pruning. It is normally only pruned for the purpose of keeping it within bounds.
