Thymus pseudolanuginosus
Blooming Time
Exposure

Woolly thyme is a wonderful small scale ground cover that makes a superb filler for between stepping- and patio-stones. So soft and velvety is woolly thyme, you will want to walk on it barefoot–because its tiny bluish gray green leaves are covered in soft gray hairs. And, during summer it gets even better, as it becomes decorated with tiny pale pink flowers. Woolly thyme can be combined with other types of thyme for an interesting effect, and it matches up nicely with many sedums which tend to share its cultural needs for well drained soil and sunshine.

Special Characteristics

Features
Wonderful bluish gray green leaves covered in velvety soft gray hairs. Tiny pale pink flowers during mid summer.
Landscape Value
Small to moderate scale ground cover, accent, or companion. Great along pathways/between stepping stones, tolerates foot traffic. Drought resistant.
Care
Watering:
Woolly Thyme is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering, to maintain soil in a moist but not wet condition, during the summer months.
Fertilizing:
Woolly Thyme is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.
Pruning:
Woolly Thyme is evergreen and does not require pruning. It is normally only pruned for the purpose of keeping it within bounds.
