Deutzia gracilis ‘Nikko’
Blooming Time
Exposure

‘Nikko’ Deutzia is an exceptional compact shrublet that functions beautifully as a moderate to large scale general cover or accent plant. Its narrow, tooth-edged deciduous leaves are colored a splendid rich green and for a while, during mid to late spring, they almost disappear behind masses of nearly pure white, ½-inch wide fragrant flowers. Then, signaling the end of the season, during mid September, they make the transition to deep burgundy.

Special Characteristics

Features
Dwarf shrub with compact habit of rich green leaves that turn deep burgundy in fall. Masses of pure white fragrant flowers during mid spring.
Landscape Value
Low maintenance moderate to large scale ground cover, dwarf hedge, companion, or accent plant.
Care
Watering:
Dwarf Slender Deutzia is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering, to maintain soil in a moist but not wet condition, during the summer months.
Fertilizing:
Dwarf Slender Deutzia is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.
Pruning:
Dwarf Slender Deutzia sets its flower buds in fall, blooms in spring, and should be pruned (if that is desirable) back to a bud, immediately after flowering.
