Its almost impossible to adequately describe this magnificent Paul Aden creation. ‘Blue Angel’ is, in a word, breathtaking. It is a big, bold, blue, highly prized hosta. Some have proclaimed it the largest of the blue hostas (reaching 3-feet tall and 6-feet wide in very rich soil), and whether or not that is true, it has a big presence. During summer, it blooms with near-white hummingbird attracting trumpets upon stalks that reach 4-feet tall. The effect is superb, yet if it never flowered, that would be ok too. That’s because its soft blue heart shaped leaves are so soft and pleasing, and lend such a lush tropical rich feel to the landscape that as a foliage plant, ‘Blue Angel’ can stand on its own.

Care

Watering:

'Blue Angel' Hosta is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering, to maintain soil in a moist but not wet condition, during the summer months.

Fertilizing:

'Blue Angel' Hosta is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

'Blue Angel' Hosta is a deciduous plant (nonevergreen) and does not require pruning. It is perfectly acceptable to allow the dropped leaves to decompose and nourish the soil.
