Herbaceous and rooting as it spreads, creeping mazus is a charming carpet former with curious purple flowers, cheerful green foliage, and assertive spreading nature. Useful for many purposes, mazus is an effective cover under small trees and tall single-stemmed shrubs, but maybe one of its most popular applications is as an edging or filler between stepping stones of patios and walkways. Creeping mazus is semievergreen, light green-leaved, and blooms late spring with loads of violet-blue white and yellow lipped, purple spotted flowers-continuing sporadically through the summer months. It tolerates limited foot traffic and is splendid in combination with dwarf conifers and Japanese maple.

Care

Watering:

Creeping Mazus requires a fair amount of supplemental watering and often requires watering on a regular basis during the growing season.

Fertilizing:

Creeping Mazus is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

Creeping Mazus is evergreen and does not require pruning. It is normally only pruned for the purpose of keeping it within bounds.
