Sporobolus heterolepsis ‘Tara’
Blooming Time
Exposure

Selected in the wild by Roy Diblik of Northwind Perennial Farm, `Tara’ is a marvelously unique selection of prairie dropseed. Like the parent species, `Tara’ is excellent for late season floral display and for creating an eye catching punctuation to the season with its fine textured foliage and lovely seed heads carried upon slender stems. Unlike the species, however, `Tara’ has a tight, spiky, vase shaped habit, and even carries its seed heads in this manner, instead of arching like the parent species. It is also significantly shorter and more compact. `Tara’ is an easy fit in any landscape and comfortably combines with a host of other grasses and perennials. Naturally, it grows well with companions, but should not be overlooked as a ground cover in mass plantings, or as a unique accent plant or edger along sidewalks and garden pathways.

Care
Watering:
'Tara' Dwarf Prairie Dropseed is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering, to maintain soil in a moist but not wet condition, during the summer months.
Fertilizing:
'Tara' Dwarf Prairie Dropseed is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.
Pruning:
'Tara' Dwarf Prairie Dropseed should be enjoyed all winter long, then, during early April before it begins to grow again, it should be pruned or mowed back to ground level.
