As its name implies, the foliage of this fine selection is black, or so deep purple that it appears black, and it is ruffled about its edges. ‘Black Scallop’ is a mutation that arose in tissue culture in the UK. Since its introduction in North America it has proven to be a strong grower, good bloomer with blue candles in spring, and due to its thick leathery leaves a bit more drought tolerant than other cultivars.

'Black Scallop' Ajuga requires a fair amount of supplemental watering and often requires watering on a regular basis during the growing season.

Fertilizing:

'Black Scallop' Ajuga is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

'Black Scallop' Ajuga is evergreen and does not require pruning. It is normally only pruned for the purpose of keeping it within bounds.
