A new and improved cultivar of Asarum europaeum discovered by MSU extension horticulturist Jerry Draheim, and assigned to Hortech, Midnight Lustre® has larger, darker, shinier, deeper-green foliage than the straight species. And, it is taller and more vigorous. In short, it’s a better landscape plant, and could popularize European Ginger… because it is now easy to grow and even more attractive. Midnight Lustre® bears curious purple-brown bell-shaped flowers in spring, but it is really a plant for foliage. It can be used en-masse, or in combination with companions.

Care

Watering:

Midnight Lustre® European Ginger requires a fair amount of supplemental watering and often requires watering on a regular basis during the growing season.

Fertilizing:

Midnight Lustre® European Ginger benefits from regular feeding and likely will grow best with: a spring (May) application of slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and a summer (July) application of slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) at a rate of about 10 pound per 1000 square feet, and and an early fall (September) application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) at a rate of 15 pounds per 1000 square feet to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

Midnight Lustre® European Ginger is evergreen and does not require pruning. It is normally only pruned for the purpose of keeping it within bounds.
