Polygonatum odoratum ‘Spiral Staircase’
Blooming Time
Exposure

While quite rare today, this plant is destined to be super popular and widely distributed. It is exceptionally attractive, durable, versatile, and unique. Its uniqueness starts with its amazingly stout stems which arise from sturdy rootstocks and simultaneously arch over gracefully and give the impression of strength and durability. Next is the foliage, which is beyond compare. It is shaped similar to other Solomon’s seal species but with an exceptionally deep-shiny-green surface and silvery undersides, and a unique 1/4 twisting quality. Finally, the exquisitely bright white spring borne flowers are carried below the stems on wiry stalks that move about gracefully in the wind. There is no downside to this plant; it is beautiful, durable, seemingly disease and insect free, drought tolerant, and easy to establish. It spreads slowly by ginger-rootlike rhizomes and is ever so easy to design with. Uses include ground covering, pathway/walkway edging and companion planting.

Care
Watering:
'Spiral Staircase' Solomon's Seal is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering, to maintain soil in a moist but not wet condition, during the summer months.
Fertilizing:
'Spiral Staircase' Solomon's Seal is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.
Pruning:
'Spiral Staircase' Solomon's Seal is a deciduous plant (nonevergreen) and does not require pruning. It is perfectly acceptable to allow the dropped leaves to decompose and nourish the soil.
