Blooming Time

Exposure

Full Sun

`Cool as Ice’ is a short, compact fescue with icy blue foliage. It is the lightest blue of the fescues we offer and provides good contrast to many companions. But, it is more than a foliage plant, and during mid- to late spring it sends up wands of delicate blue-green, wind-responsive flowers which wave above the spiky tufts of ice-blue. In time, the flower heads age to a warm golden-yellow. `Cool as Ice’ is a fairly vigorous grower and will thrive in well drained soil. It does most of its growing during spring and fall but tolerates summer’s heat and humidity, and it is versatile with uses that include small scale ground covering or edging, rock garden specimen and companion plant in sunny areas of the landscape.

Care

Watering:

`Cool as Ice' Fescue is very drought tolerant and typically only needs watering during the hottest days of summer.

Fertilizing:

`Cool as Ice' Fescue is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

`Cool as Ice' Fescue should be enjoyed all winter long, then, during early April before it begins to grow again, it should be pruned or mowed back to ground level.
