‘Bartzella’ was bred by peony expert Roger Anderson crossing P. suffruticosa (tree peony) and P. officinalis (common herbaceous peony). It is crazy floriferous and once mature can produce 80 semi-double, neatly spaced pastel-yellow flowers on a single plant. Each flower is 8-9 inches in diameter, accented with rose-purple flares in the center and emitting a prominent sweet fragrance. ‘Bartzella’ forms deer resistant, sturdy and relatively compact clumps that support its beautiful flowers. It is astounding when planted en masse with other peonies of contrasting color and is a great companion to many perennials.

Care

Watering:

Bartzella Intersectional Peony requires a fair amount of supplemental watering and often requires watering on a regular basis during the growing season.

Fertilizing:

Bartzella Intersectional Peony benefits from regular feeding and likely will grow best with: a spring (May) application of slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and a summer (July) application of slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) at a rate of about 10 pound per 1000 square feet, and and an early fall (September) application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) at a rate of 15 pounds per 1000 square feet to encourage root development and cold hardiness.

Pruning:

Bartzella Intersectional Peony can be pruned in a special manner so as to encourage flowering. Please see The Secret To Having Wisteria Flowers in this website.
