Arctostaphylos uva-ursi ‘Massachusetts’
Blooming Time
Exposure

This florific selection of our lovely native species is a beautiful, rugged, trailing ground cover that is excellent in infertile sandy acidic soils. Not only is it drought tolerant and long lived but very attractive bearing white to pinkish urn-shaped, springborne flowers which make for exceptional contrast against its deep glossy-green evergreen foliage. Later in summer, its red berry-like fruit furnishes food for wildlife and often persists through winter.

Care
Watering:
'Massachusetts' Bearberry is very drought tolerant and typically only needs watering during the hottest days of summer.
Fertilizing:
'Massachusetts' Bearberry needs little fertilizer, but benefits from a single springtime or fall topdressing (about 1 inch deep) of organic compost or well rotted leaves. Alternatively, a springtime application of a slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet.
Pruning:
'Massachusetts' Bearberry is evergreen and does not require pruning. It is normally only pruned for the purpose of keeping it within bounds.
