‘Sun King’ is just excellent in terms of color in the shade; the huge compound leaves are a wonderful golden chartreuse-yellow. The big, bold, sunny foliage is further enhanced in summer when the plant bears 2-foot long arching spikes of small white blooms that mature to sprays of purplish black fruit in the fall. This deciduous clump-former prefers moist, well drained soils and dappled shade. Use ‘Sun King’ as a moderate-scale ground cover, specimen, or companion to darker leaved, shade loving perennials. 2020 Perennial Plant of the Year.

Care
Watering:
Gold Japanese Spikenard requires a fair amount of supplemental watering and often requires watering on a regular basis during the growing season.
Fertilizing:
Gold Japanese Spikenard is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.
Pruning:
Gold Japanese Spikenard should be pruned while dormant during late fall or winter.
