Bouteloua curtipendula
Blooming Time
Exposure

(Image Courtesy of North Creek Nuseries) A drought-tolerant native species, Sideoats grama forms low clumps of slender, wiry, light-green foliage. A slow-spreader, Boutaloua curtipendula is a well-mannered grass, adorned with arching stems of oat-like inflorescences, in mid-summer. These emerge in shades of lavender-green and eventually age to a warm tan and dangle gracefully. A popular choice for restoration, Bouteloua cutipendula is tolerant of hot, dry sites, and also functions well to control erosion.

Care
Watering:
Sideoats grama is very drought tolerant and typically only needs watering during the hottest days of summer.
Fertilizing:
Sideoats grama is a moderate feeder, benefiting from a couple of annual applications of slow release fertilizer. A spring application of a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet, and during early fall, an application of a 2-1-2 ratio (such as a 10-5-10) can be applied to encourage root development and cold hardiness.
Pruning:
Sideoats grama should be pruned while dormant during late fall or winter.
