Part of the Piet Oudolf collection, this unusual little bluestem is a radiant selection from seed collected on a trip to Ha Ha Tonka State Park in Missouri. A mid-size Schizachyrium, ‘Ha Ha Tonka’ is unique for the fine hairs that grow along the leaves and flowering stems, these tiny hairs (botanically known as trichomes) give the plants a lovely, frosted appearance when backlit in the morning. With a sturdy vase-like upright habit and lovely red coloration on the stems in autumn, ‘Ha Ha Tonka’ provides unique color and textural interest in the landscape.

'Ha Ha Tonka' Little Bluestem needs little fertilizer, but benefits from a single springtime or fall topdressing (about 1 inch deep) of organic compost or well rotted leaves. Alternatively, a springtime application of a slow release fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio (such as a 15-5-10) can be applied at a rate of about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet.
